Facilities

Operating Theatres:

Various theatre designs can be supplied to suit the requirements of the surgical team, ranging from single ‘standard’ layout GA theatres to larger multi-theatre operating departments.

All our theatres meet the requirements of the NHS HBN and HTM guidelines for the design and installation of healthcare facilities, specifically:

• HBN26 – Facilities for Surgical Procedures
• HTM03/1 – Specialised Ventilation for Healthcare premises
• HTM02/1 – Medical Gas Pipeline systems

Layouts and specifications will vary according to the type of procedures to be carried out and we are able to supply theatres to suit specific departmental or surgical disciplines:

General anaesthetic theatres

As a base specification our theatres are set up for General Anaesthetic (GA) use and are installed with a rooftop plantroom or plant deck containing air-handing, heating and cooling systems in accordance with HTM03/1. Internally, it will be fitted out to Group 1 level with anaesthetic pendants, operating lamps, surgeons control panels etc. and will be electrically protected with an integrated UPS and IPS system.

Unless otherwise specified, a GA theatre suite will normally comprise a 54m2 operating room, anaesthetic room, scrub, dirty utility, corridor access circulation and a ‘lay-up’ prep room.

Orthopaedic theatres

Our orthopaedic theatres are fitted with a laminar flow ‘ultra clean’ ventilation canopy. In terms of layout it will have all the same attributes as a GA theatre except that it contains a sterile pack store instead of a ‘lay-up’ prep, due to the convention that sterile packs should be opened under a sterile laminar air stream if available.

Ophthalmic theatres

Powerful microscopes and laser equipment are used in eye surgery which impacts on the design of the theatre structure. These theatres incorporate a concrete floor to negate the effects of vibration on sensitive floor-mounted equipment or the steel structure in the roof can be strengthened if ceiling-hung equipment is preferred.

Other variants

All our theatres can be bespoke designed or enhanced to enable different uses or performance levels. For example, parts of the theatre can be lined with lead sheet to afford protection from X-rays if portable imaging equipment is to be used. Similarly, treatment to doors and vision panels can be applied if laser equipment is to be used. Air-handling systems can be specifically designed if necessary to achieve different operating parameters i.e. higher humidity levels sometimes required for plastic surgery.

In-Patient Accommodation:

We design, manufacture and install in-patient accommodation, principally ward space, to suit the requirements of the hospital.

Our wards and other in-patient accommodation are designed to meet the requirements of the NHS HBN and HTM guidelines for the design and installation of healthcare facilities, specifically:

• HBN04 – Adult In-patient Facilities
• HBN40 – Common Activity Spaces

Wards

Our wards are operational within 25 weeks from date of order. They can be installed to up to 5 storeys high and to any size and mix of shared and single room bed space so that patient utilisation is maximised.

The bed cores can be provided with ancillary facilities, dependent on the location of the ward and the medical purpose it serves. Ancillary facilities can include; consulting space, nurse stations, stores, changing areas, rest areas and communal areas.

Specialised in-patient accommodation

As well as standard medical or surgical bed space, we can provide specialist in-patient accommodation to serve various disciplines.

HDU: High dependency units can be provided, incorporating glass divider walls and articulating ceiling mounted gas and monitoring pendants, designed to meet the requirements of HBN57: Critical Care Facilities.

Renal Facilities: We can provide main or satellite dialysis units, including RO plantrooms if required. As with our ward facilities a renal unit can be provided with a range of ancillary areas to suit the particular requirements of the location.

Isolation Rooms: Ensuite isolation rooms can be provided, either as standalone units or as areas within a larger ward facility. The areas will be mechanically ventilated to maintain a negative pressure and would be approached via a ventilated lobby. Filtration levels can be chosen to provide the specific levels of protection required, dependent on the clinical needs.

Maternity Facilities: Our expertise extends to the design and supply of entire maternity departments and we have specific experience in the provision of birthing rooms, mother and child bed accommodation, SCBU and obstetric theatres.

Imaging Facilities:

We design, manufacture and install imaging facilities including MRI, CT, X-ray and cardiac catheterisation laboratories.

All of our imaging facilities are designed to meet the requirements of the NHS HBN and HTM guidelines for the design and installation of healthcare facilities, specifically:

• HBN06 – Facilities for Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology

MRI

Several key considerations need to be made when designing a modular building to house MRI equipment. Structurally, it must be capable of bearing the load of the imaging equipment itself which in some cases can weigh many tonnes. Technically, it must be capable of housing the control system hardware and conditioning the environment to prevent overheating of this critical equipment. Lastly, dependent on the location and external factors, the structure should be capable of shielding the equipment from the effects of outside radio wave interference and protect the outside world from the powerful magnetic forces generated.

We are used to working with both Trusts and the equipment suppliers to develop modular solutions that deliver imaging facilities to exactly suit the site location.

X-Ray and CAT

X-Ray and CAT scanning facilities require lead shielding to ensure safe operation and a dedicated area to house the control and image capture hardware which needs to be cooled to prevent overheating and allow maximum facility uptime.

In addition to the core imaging rooms, support facilities such as consulting, changing rooms, and waiting areas can be provided within a bespoke design to create a self-contained diagnostic imaging facility.

Cardiac catheterisation

Because of the safety and expediency of cardiac catheterisation, increasing numbers of heart procedures are being carried out in ‘cath labs’ instead of in operating theatres, leading to an increase in demand for these facilities.

We can provide both diagnostic and interventional cath labs, as stand-alone facilities or as part of a larger configuration.

Mortuaries:

Our mortuary facilities are designed to meet the requirements of the NHS HBN and HTM guidelines for the design and installation of healthcare facilities, specifically:

• HBN20 – Facilities Mortuary and Post-Mortem Rooms

We provide bespoke mortuary facilities that can be specified and designed in consultation with the user to provide a solution to meet the exact needs of the commissioning trust or local authority.

We have experience in the provision of body storage areas, chilled and frozen for standard or forensic use and have provided full autopsy facilities for up 6 deceased as well as individual forensic pathology bays.

Laboratories:

Our laboratories are designed to meet the requirements of the NHS HBN and HTM guidelines for the design and installation of healthcare facilities, specifically:

• HBN15 – Facilities for Pathology Services

We design laboratory facilities to suit the purposes of various disciplines, ranging from pathology and phlebotomy to cyto-toxic pharmacy.

Normally fitted out to Group 1 level, items such as laminar flow benches or fume cupboards can be supplied on request.

Laboratories supplied in the past include standard pathology laboratories designed to house bench mounted automatic analysers and haematology facilities.

Larger facilities supplied include a cyto-toxic drug preparation facility, ventilated to cleanroom standards and a series of containment facilities used to safely allow the storage of highly toxic pathogens for immunology work.

Day Surgery Units:

ModuleCo day surgery units are designed to meet the requirements of the NHS HBN and HTM guidelines for the design and installation of healthcare facilities, specifically:

• HBN 10-02 – Day Surgery Facilities

Large-scale theatre solutions can be provided in the form of day surgery facilities or larger elective surgery blocks.

Across a range of surgical disciplines we have supplied general, orthopaedic and ophthalmic day surgeries ranging from single theatres up to 4 theatre cores.

These are bespoke facilities that should exactly reflect the needs and capacity requirements of the healthcare organisations they serve and they are most effectively specified and designed through a consultative process between our design team and the facility users.

To deliver these larger technical schemes we have developed over the years a tried and tested methodology of consultation and design iteration, resulting in a comprehensive set of room data sheets and C-Sheets which are agreed by all parties prior to production.

Our day surgery units can incorporate GA, orthopaedic or ophthalmic theatres, a combination or multiple of them and can include the following areas as required:

• Recovery – 1st , 2nd and 3rd stage
• Pre-op and post-op ward space
• Patient changing areas
• Waiting areas and public facilities
• Reception and nurse base
• Consulting rooms
